Self-Care Tips

As National Mental Health Awareness month approaches, we are reminded to take care of ourselves and each other. In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, we want to remind you of a few ways that you can take care of your body.

Eat a diet full of fruit. Did you know that berries have mood boosting qualities that help us feel happier? It’s true! There are different types of foods that affect our moods. Ever eat to many carbohydrates and don’t feel the best? That’s because eating too many carbohydrates make us feel sluggish. See if you notice a difference the next time you have a fresh bowl of berries.

Get 30 minutes of exercise per day. Exercise helps to get our blood flowing. When we have injuries, blood helps move medicine, vitamins, and minerals to the parts of the body that need extra help to heal. So a little bit of exercise can help our bodies heal faster.

Be social. Sometimes, we might feel lonely and need a little pick-me-up. Getting together with a friend or attending a community event might help our minds feel a bit less lonely when we are surrounded by others.

Set boundaries. Other times we just have to realize that we can’t do it all no matter who is  guilting us. Learning to say, “no” can be a powerful thing. Saying no doesn’t have to be a rude task, but a helpful one while you learn what you need to do and what you don’t need to do.

Take a mental health day. Maybe we just need to take a day full of PJs, comfy blankets, and favorite movies to overcome the stress of the world. Just like scraping your knee and letting it heal, your brain too needs time to heal from stress. Ever go for a walk in the woods without road noise, cell phones, and distractions? How did you feel after that walk? Okay, your body might be a bit achy but did your mind feel clear? Getting away from the noise and taking a mental health day might just be what the doctor ordered.

It is okay to need a little more help.
