Fireworks Safety

The Fourth of July is coming up, and with it comes parades, barbeques, and fireworks. Fireworks, while pretty and fun to watch, are pyrotechnics. They can be dangerous and cause injury if not handled properly. Here are some ways to keep you and your loved ones safe during fireworks.
- Do not use homemade or illegal fireworks. Use professional ones only.
- Wear close toed shoes.
- Younger children shouldn’t handle fireworks. Older children may with adult supervision.
- Supervise children using sparklers. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can cause burns. If a child isn’t wearing shoes or is wearing open toed shoes, do not allow them to play with sparklers.
- Do not light fireworks if you are under the influence. If there are plans for consuming alcohol, designate one person to be the firework lighter.
- Stay far away from a firework after it has been lit. Do not hold a lit firework in your hands.
- Point fireworks away from flammable objects. Never point a firework at a person.
- Fireworks are for outside only. Do not light indoors.
- Light fireworks one at a time. If a firework doesn’t go off after being lit, do not try to relight it.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby just in case.
- Spectate fireworks from about 30 feet away or further.
Another option is to go to a professional fireworks show instead. Many cities will have fireworks planned. Check what time your local show is at. Wear bugspray, as bugs tend to be active in the evenings. Remember to drink water, stay safe, and most importantly have fun!
