What to Do If You Are Bitten by a Snake

Getting bitten by a snake can be a frightening experience, but staying calm and taking the right steps can make a big difference in the outcome. Whether the snake is venomous or not, quick action is critical.

  1. Stay Calm and Call for Help
First and foremost, try to remain as calm and still as possible. Panic increases your heart rate, which can help venom spread faster if the snake is venomous. Call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately.
  2. Try to remember the size, color, markings, and shape of the snake. A decent description can help to identify the snake and the best course of treatment. Remember: not all snakes are venomous, but it is always best to receive proper medical care regardless.
  3. Keep the Affected Area Immobilized
Keep the bitten limb below heart level and as still as possible to slow the spread of venom. Avoid moving the bite area, and do not attempt to suck out the venom, make incisions, or apply a tourniquet. These methods can cause more harm than good.
  4. Remove Tight Items
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the bite area in case of swelling. Swelling can happen quickly and restricted items can cause additional injury.
  5. Monitor Symptoms
If possible, note the time of the bite and any symptoms that appear. Common symptoms of a venomous bite include pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, numbness, weakness, and paralysis. Sharing this information with medical professionals can help guide treatment.
  6. Do Not Attempt to Catch the Snake
Do not try to capture or kill the snake. If you can do so safely, take a photo from a distance to help identify it.
